Squash: Maiden edition of Geophase annual tournament good for ex-pros——ex-player

Lagos, Jan. 22, 2024 (NAN) Some ex-pros squash players on Monday have said that having the maiden of the Geophase Club Pro Squash Tournament, for ex-pros players would give former players a sense of belonging after retirement, from playing squash competitively.
In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos they described the just concluded maiden edition of Geophase Annual which held at The Lagos Country Club Ikeja, as a well thought out tournament.
NAN reports that the Geophase Club Pro Squash Tournament, the first of its kind in Nigeria, is specifically designed for former professional squash players who had once earned a living from playing Squash but are now bonafide members of various Squash Playing Clubs across the country.
Yusuf Durosinlorun, a one time number two ranked player in the 1990’s told NAN that playing at the tournament brought back memories. He said such tournament will give them a sense of belonging.
“This tournament has given us a sense of belonging. The fact that we don’t play competitively as we did in our playing days does not mean we should stop playing among ourselves.
“I came third, playing at the tournament gave me a mental boost and I believe it did same for the other players. Playing for leisure is different from playing a tournament.
“I appreciate the sponsor and I hope that we can continue to experience this regularly,” he said
Seun Peters, a former President of the Nigeria Professional Squash Players of Nigeria who was first runners up told NAN that younger players should be pleased to know that they the hope of competing after retirement.
” Now we can say we have all categories of age grade competition. It’s good that we all can compete as ex professionals. So there’s hope for players coming behind us to play competitively even after tournament.
“I’m looking forward to more of this initiative while I applaud our sponsor Dr Kayode Waliu He has done well for initiating this,” Peters said.
NAN reports that Jude Odeh, a former Nigerian number one player based in the United States of America won the tournament, while Peters of Headwaters Squash Academy was runner up.
Yusuf Durosinlorun and Stephen Peters shared the joint third positions. Attractive cash prizes were won.
In the Closed Tournament, Murphy Yusuf won the Veteran category defeating Dr Tunde Adewoye in a very tough and engaging encounter. Deji Sule and Taiwo Sanni shared the joint third position.
In the Men Category, Odeh also won by defeating Dr Bunmi Apata while Haniel Hadison and Dayo Tifase shared the joint third position.
The Sponsor of the Tournament, Waliu promised to make the next edition of tournament bigger and better next year.
The Chairman of the Lagos Country Club Semoore Badejo, commended the sponsor and enjoin other members of the Section to also make similar efforts to raise the bar in the game of Squash. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
