NYSC D-G, governors task youth corps members on productive engagements, community services

Sokoto, March 6, 2024 (NAN) The Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, has tasked corps members to be productive and participate actively in the community development programmes during the mandatory one year national service.


 


Ahmed, represented by the NYSC Coordinator in Sokoto State, Alhaji Usman Yakubu-Yaro, gave the charge at the closing ceremony of 2024 Batch ‘A stream 1′ Orientation programme for corps members at the camp in Sokoto, on Wednesday.


 


He advised them to accept their postings in good faith and integrate with residents of their host communities, as well as contribute to the growth of the area.


 


Ahmed also urged the corps members to respect the culture and traditions of their host communities, ensure peaceful coexistence, and to be resilient and add value to the communities.


“Take security issues seriously, read the instructions in your manual and abide by them accordingly. Your security is our concern, but no one can secure you more than yourself,” he said.


The D-G emphasised the need for 1590 corps members posted to the Sokoto and Zamfara, who were at the orientation camp in Sokoto, to actively be involved in the entrepreneurship skills training programmes.


According to him, this will assist them to become self reliant in future.


In Delta, Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori urged the corps members to embrace diversity and be responsible citizens wherever they were posted to for primary assignments.


Oborevwori made the call on Wednesday while speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Batch A’ Stream 1 corps members at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Issele-Uku.


Oborevwori, represented by Ms Orode Uduaghan, Commissioner, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Girl Child Development, said that the lessons and knowledge learnt in camp would enable the corps members cope with the new realities they would face during the service year.


“The NYSC is designed to impart in you the virtues of patriotism, team spirit and above all, national integration and cohesion.


“Your stay in your areas of primary assignments would pleasantly help you to erase such negative tendencies, stereotypes and preconceived notions about fellow Nigerians.


“I can assure you that as you leave here, you are going into the receptive and warm embrace of Deltans, wherever you find yourselves,” he said.


He urged them to strive to be above board at all times and exhibit such character traits that people should proudly emulate.


In his address, Mr Olusegun Alao, the State Coordinator of NYSC, urged the corps members to use the skills learnt and acquired during the orientation period to create opportunities for themselves and others.


“The past three weeks, have indeed been demanding and impactful. Corps members were exposed to different lectures ranging from, culture and traditions of the people of Delta State..


“As we conclude these three weeks, it is evident that the objectives of the orientation have been achieved.


“Corps members have demonstrated a high level of discipline, dedication, commitment, and readiness to serve diligently in various communities across the state for their Primary Assignment,” he said.


Alao also urged them to embrace the service year with enthusiasm, dedication, and a commitment to nation building.


Also, Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has appealed to employers in the state not to reject corps members posted to their establishment for the service year.


 


Sule made the appeal on Wednesday in Keffi at the closing ceremony of the orientation of 2024 Batch A Stream 1 corps members posted to the state.


 


The said that rejecting corps members would demoralize the zeal of the individual to serve in the state


 


Sule also urged the corps members to accept their postings in good faith as the postings were done in line with the policies of the scheme and the felt needs of the state.


 


“Your postings to the nook and crannies of the state is geared towards achieving the objectives of the scheme and also towards bringing development to the grassroots.


 


“Therefore see your posting as a clarion call to render selfless service to the good people of the state,” he said.


 


The governor tasked the corps members to carry out their assignment with the sense of duty and commitment.


 


“The experiences shared, friendships forged, and lessons learned during the orientation course will serve as foundation for an impactful service year ahead.


 


“Whether you find yourself in bustling cities, serene villages or remote hamlets, let the principles of unity, understanding and empathy guide your interactions.


 


“Embrace the communities you are called to serve for in their stories, you will find the true essence of your purpose. Be ambassadors of hope, the catalysts for progress and advocates for s better tomorrow,” he said.


 


In his address, Mr Abdullahi Jikamshi, the State Coordinator of the scheme, applauded the corps members and the entire camp community for the success of the orientation course despite some challenges.


 


Jikamshi said that during the three weeks orientation exercise, the corps members were exposed to the ideals of the scheme and underwent diverse training activities such a drills, lectures, value reorientation.


 


“Our corps members were equally introduced to the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program, a successful initiative of the scheme which has paved the way for numerous entrepreneurs, job creators and wealth builders..


 


“Your host communities eagerly anticipate your presence, inspired by the achievements of your predecessors.


 


“Do not disappoint the trust placed in you. Remember to share the knowledge gained during the orientation course with your host community,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
