PGA Nigeria disowns alleged illegal emergency meeting
The Professional Golfers’ Association of Nigeria (PGA) has dissociated itself from an alleged illegal Emergency General Meeting (EGM) scheduled to hold in Lagos on Tuesday.
The Executive Director of the Association, Dr Tony Philmoore, said the planned meeting was unlawful and did not have the approval of the PGA’s recognised leadership structure.
Philmoore said a competent court of law in Nigeria had ruled against the convening of the meeting, rendering it invalid and without legal standing.
According to him, the President of the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF) had also directed the cancellation of all EGMs during a peace meeting held on Jan. 21, in an effort to restore harmony within the association.
“The PGA of Nigeria respects the rule of law and the intervention of the Nigeria Golf Federation. Any gathering that goes against these resolutions cannot stand,” Philmoore said.
He explained that the PGA Executive Committee, in compliance with the NGF’s directive, had officially cancelled all EGMs in the interest of peace and unity within the golfing community.
Philmoore further noted that due process was not followed in calling the alleged meeting, stressing that established procedures must be respected to preserve the integrity of the association.
“Our association thrives on order, fairness and due process. Anything outside this framework threatens the stability we are working hard to protect,” he said.
The executive director warned that any resolutions or outcomes arising from the meeting should be disregarded, as they do not reflect the collective position of the PGA of Nigeria.
He described the organisers of the meeting as a “few disgruntled members” acting in conflict with court decisions and the wider interest of professional golfers in the country.
“The PGA of Nigeria dissociates itself completely from this fraudulent and illegal EGM, and any engagement with such actions will amount to illegality,” Philmoore added.
He urged members of the golfing community to remain calm, law-abiding and committed to ongoing peace efforts within the association.
