Mr Dayo Alebiosu, the Lagos State Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, says his support for the renovation of the Faculty of Law at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) is a deliberate act of giving back to an institution that shaped him.

Alebiosu a former lawmaker stated that Unilag had contributed significantly to his legislative effectiveness.

Alebiosu stated this in a statement on Tuesday at the unveiling of the renovated Law Annex Lecture Hall at the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, held in honour of retired Supreme Court Justice George A. Oguntade.

He said the faculty played a crucial role in shaping his performance while serving in the House of Representatives, where he chaired the Committee on Treaties and Agreements, noting that leadership of the committee required a strong grasp of legal principles despite his training as an architect.

According to the commissioner, he relied on the expertise of constitutional law scholar Akin Oyebode, who mobilised academics and students from the faculty to support the committee’s work.

“That collaboration enabled us to develop some of the best bills, policies and legislative frameworks for the country.

"Supporting the Faculty today is my way of paying back for that invaluable contribution,” Alebiosu said.

He added that sustained partnership between academia and public institutions underscored the value of bridging the gap between “town and gown” to strengthen governance and national development.

The ceremony attracted leading figures from the legal community, including the Dean of the Faculty, Abiola Sanni, and the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Kazeem Olanrewaju Alogba, as well as Senior Advocates of Nigeria, scholars and government officials.

In his address, Justice Oguntade urged students to uphold integrity, discipline and strong character, describing them as essential to sustaining public trust in the legal system.

The renovation of the lecture hall was championed by Olugbenga Ajala and supported by several donors committed to advancing legal education.

Alebiosu commended the initiative as a strategic investment in the future of legal education, stressing that continued collaboration between professionals and academic institutions remained vital for societal progress.
