Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has pledged the support of the Lagos State Government for activities marking the 10th anniversary of the death of late legal icon and political activist, Tunji Braithwaite.

Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance while receiving members of the Braithwaite family and representatives of the Tunji Braithwaite Foundation during a courtesy visit at Lagos House, Marina.

In his response, Sanwo-Olu commended the family for sustaining the ideals and intellectual heritage of the late political activist.

“Dr Braithwaite was a moral compass in Nigeria’s political journey.

“His courage, integrity and passion for justice helped shape democratic conversations in the country,” the governor said.

He added that Lagos State remained proud of sons and daughters who had contributed significantly to national development.

“Discussions around leadership, responsibility and the social contract are still very relevant today.

“We are pleased to support initiatives that preserve our democratic values and honour distinguished Lagosians,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor assured the family of the state’s collaboration to ensure the success of the anniversary activities.

The anniversary, with the theme “Politics with Conscience: Leadership, Responsibility, and the Nigerian Social Contract.

The theme is designed to reflect on the late statesman’s enduring contributions to democracy, human rights and principled politics in Nigeria.

Speaking during the visit, Olumide recalled their father’s role as founder of the Nigeria Advance Party during the Second Republic, as well as his lifelong advocacy for justice, accountability and multi-party democracy.

They said the celebration would serve as a platform to promote ethical leadership and responsible governance among current and future leaders.

According to the organisers, the main event will hold at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Abuja.

Highlights of the programme include the launch of a documentary on Braithwaite’s life and times, a review of his book The Jurisprudence of the Living Oracles, and the unveiling of a comprehensive biography chronicling his activism and political philosophy.

The family also disclosed plans to consult the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to seek institutional support for the national dialogue expected to attract participants from across Nigeria and the international community.

The Tunji Braithwaite Foundation said the commemoration would not only celebrate the memory of the late patriot but also rekindle conversations on ethical leadership and citizen-centred governance in Nigeria.
